Food and Love

Today was supposed to be about my favorite book.  BUT IT’S NOT!!  Haha, tricked ya!

I taught 5th grade today.  I didn’t really do much, but when I got home I was exhausted.  Probably because I spent 4 hours talking to Thom when I should have been asleep, but you can’t resist a phone call from Thom.  It starts off all “I hate my life, I hate my job, I’m such a hipster, blah blah blah” (on both our ends)  and end up “OMG I’M ADDICTED TO TUMBLR AND NOW I’M GOING TO LAUGH AT SOMETHING HARRY POTTER/MEAN GIRLS RELATED EVEN THOUGH WHAT YOU SAID WASN’T REMOTELY FUNNY.” (Mostly on my end.)  And we totally get each other because we are like twins.  It’s totally awesome.

So I took a nap.  I woke up to my younger sister telling me she was leaving me money for dinner, and that she had plans.  I want you all to know my 16-year-old sister has more of a social life than I do, and she gives me money for dinner.  She’s pretty cool sometimes.

But I fell back asleep, and woke up completely disoriented.  My mom (who also has more of a social life than me) was at an event she forgot to tell me about, so I was to eat dinner alone.

This can be tragic.  Should I just order pizza and stay at home like the recluse I am?   No, because it’s Friday night and it’ll take two hours to get to my house, and I effing starving.  So I decide on Chinese.

But what do I want?  Cashew, or sweet and sour, or orange chicken, or something else?  OR, I can go inside and eat whatever I want because there’s a BUFFET.

Buffet pwns drive through. Always.

Then I realize this could be the perfect situation to pick up some lonesome cute guy.  Guys like food.  And obviously I’m single since I’m all alone in the restaurant. I picked a target: a probably 30 year old man, slight beer belly, cell phone on a clip attached to his belt.  PERFECT.

I decided to make a handy list on why it’s perfectly ok to eat dinner inside a restaurant even if you are alone, and how to pick up men while doing so:

1. As mentioned, you can pick up guys.  You both have something in common already, too, because you’re at the same restaurant!

2. You might see someone you know, and get a chance to talk to them.  This happened tonight.  I was able to convey to said acquaintance that I was in college in town, where I was working, and what I was studying.  This not only lets the target know you are able to hold a job and won’t be a gold digger, but you are also working towards a brighter future for yourself by attending college.  Also, he will find out people actually like you enough to talk to you in public!

3. Or, this may just let him know where he needs to be to proficiently stalk you.

4. On an unrelated romantic note, the waitress might feel bad for you an bring you 3 fortune cookies.  She didn’t tonight, but it has happened before.

Old guy did look at me once.  I caught him.  But then he got in a rape van with a handicapped license plate, so I decided not to pursue him any further.

Sometimes, I can make really good choices.

* Day 04 — Your favorite quote

Today I’m supposed to tell you what my favorite quote is.  I laughed that time my leg fell asleep and started violently twitching, and my cousin told me I could possibly have polio.  I laughed because no one gets polio anymore.  Right?   I thought it was cool when Peter Pan said “To die would be an awfully big adventure”.  And then I cried a little.  But I can’t pick a defining quote that I live by.  Isn’t that why most quotes become famous?  Because we take them as words of advice, and believe the person who spoke them is the most intelligent human being to ever walk the planet?

So instead, I’m going to leave you all with some little tidbits of information that I have gathered through the years.  Technically, they are quotes because someone at one time uttered these words to me.  Or I just came up with them all on my own, because I am a frickin GENIUS.

Man who goes to bed with itchy butt wakes up with stinky finger.  (Thank you, Uncle Chris)

Be yourself.

Everything happens for a reason and works out the way it’s supposed to. That’s what makes you who you are.

If you’ve got it, flaunt it. (My 75 year old great grandmother said this to me during our cousin’s wedding. She wore an extremely revealing dress. We thought grandma would be mortified. She wasn’t.)

Be a simple person if you want to be.  You don’t have to own the latest gadets or dress extremely fashionably to matter.  Everyone in this world matters.

If it happens, it happens.  There isn’t a whole lot you can do to stop it now.

* Day 03 — Your favorite television program

Right now, it’s Glee, followed closely by Grey’s Anatomy and The Office, then Modern Family.

I realize most of you are rolling your eyes thinking, “Of course she said Glee”. And I realize that right now, it’s one of those shows that became so extremely popular so fast, that it’s almost a joke. But it’s not to me. I look forward to it all week, because I know for one hour, it’s going to be ok. I’m going to laugh, I’m going to maybe cry, but I’ll smile the whole time and I can’t really say that about anything else in my life.

And I think it’s hilarious, because every character is so well written and thought out. These are all people I went to high school with, and I think that’s true for every one. The show is so easy to relate to because we know someone just like Puck who thought he was God’s gift to women and the best thing since Super Mario Brothers. And we all had that one teacher who either made a huge impact in our lives.

I guess for me it’s just an escape. I can lost myself for just a little while and forget that everything else is happening.

Really, isn’t that what television is supposed to be? I know people don’t just randomly burst into song in the hallways while wearing 80s Madonna garb, but maybe life would be a little more bearable if we did.

* Day 02 — Your favorite movie

This may be the hardest one. I can’t just pick one, so I’m going to make a top 10 list.

1. Moulin Rouge!

Come on. It’s visually gorgeous. And, Ewan McGregor singing is heaven.

2. Stardust

Cutest movie ever. Also, it has the best quotes.

3. When Harry Met Sally

No explanation needed.

4. The Princess Bride

5. (500) Days of Summer

Three words: Joseph Gordon Levitt. I love this movie to death.

6. The Sound of Music

It’s a classic. If you haven’t seen it, watch it. It’s worth the 3 hours of your time.

7. Any Harry Potter movie-But especially Goblet of Fire

It’s also my favorite HP book.

8. The Young Victoria

It’s FANTASTIC. Visually gorgeous, and I have a slight girl crush on Emily Blunt.

9. Casablanca

So worth your time. I wasn’t sure about it the first time I watched it, but every time I do I fall in love with it a little more.

10. The Holiday.

Jack Black is adorable. And the tent scene makes me cry every effing time.

* Day 01 — Your favorite song

Now I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on

the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What’s really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don’t even know the name
But if I did, well really, what’s it to you?
There’s a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn’t matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch
I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I’ll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I seriously have 4 different versions of this song-Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley, Kate Voegel, and the Canadian Tenors. I don’t have a favorite version, I love them all.

It’s just timeless.

The Most Excited I’ve Ever Been

What an awful weekend. It was spent at my grandmother’s, going through my great grandparents’ belongings, sorting out what went to who.

I spent most of it crying.

Let’s start with the mirror. THE mirror. The mirror I’ve adored since I was 6. I would stare at the carvings on the frame, and the ribbon decoration on the top of the glass. My aunt took it, but only after looking at it for 2 minutes, wondering, and then finally declaring she “could do something with it.” She did the same thing with THE table.

And on the way home, my mom decided to bring up THE sewing box. THE sewing box I asked my grandma for. But guess else wants it? My cousin. Guess who probably won’t get it? ME.

I also decided to not move out of my mom’s house this year. I’ve decided it would be better to wait until I graduate. Yeah, it’s going to suck sometimes. But I can save more money, and it would suck more if I moved out and then found I couldn’t make it quite yet.

I also talked to my dad. He can’t have dinner with me this week, because he can’t afford it. But he’s not working this Friday (as usual) so he can go see HER this weekend (also as usual).

There are so many things I want to say right now, but they would all make me seem ungrateful and bratty. So I’m just gonna say this:

NaNoWriMo is in 2 months. And I can’t freaking wait.
